Settlement

The Tux Valley was probably first inhabited by the Breons, who were part of the Illyrian tribes of the Rhaeto-Roman people. A prehistority bronze pin was found by a hunter on the Tuxer Joch, and numerous ancient local names, such as "Naudis - Nappas - Vallruck - Els", indicate the early settlement of the region by the Illyrians. First official mention of Tux was made in 1280.
Up until the mid-15th century, Hintertux belonged to the parsonage of Matrei in the Wipp Valley. The simple Tux crosses at the cemetera in Mauern serve as reminders of the strenuous trek that the Tuxers made over the Tuxer Joch to bury their dead.
The political relationship to the Wipp Valley was maintained for many years as well. It was first in 1926 municipality of Schmirn. Since that time, the former Salzburg "Hofmark" Lanersbach, Lämperbichl and Hintertux comprise the present-day community of Tux.

Bubbling hot springs

Nature was generous to Hintertux, providing it with 23 hot springs.
The radium-containing, clear and odorless water from the springs has a temperature of 20.5 °C. As early as 1849, Matthias Burgklechner,
a renowned Tyrolean historian, wrote about the
therapeutic effects of the spring in an expert opinion.
Today, the springs feed both an outdoor and indoor swimming pool.
